The mission of Quetzal Co-op is to serve as an Indigenous Peoples Cooperative in fulfillment of the continental Treaty of Teotihuacan, by supporting community based economic development projects and indigenous trade. Tonatierra has marketed the Indigenous Peoples coffee under the label of Maya Ik' since January of '96. Following in the tradition of trade routes that spanned the continent, the exchange of the coffee Maya Ik' was a historic first, being a completely indigenous collaborative effort between the autonomous regions of the Mayan Nations of Chiapas ans Xicana Mexicano autonomous Pueblos of Aztlan.
This tradition is now being carried forward by Cafetzin and Quetzal Co-op. As a principle, the Quetzal Co-op always purchases their coffee at or above the fair trade value from growers of our sister organizations of Indigenous Peoples. This high grade coffee is imported from one of the most impoverished indigenous regions of Chiapas, Mexico, and is being produced and marketed by the Indigenous peoples themselves as an expression of economic autonomy after 500 years of colonial oppression. Cafetzin is imported as a whole green bean and on an "as needed" basis it is roasted locally to help provide the freshest tasting coffee possible. |
